Table of contents
The 2024 Answer.AI Report Card looks at top interests, study skills, and aspirations based on data from six million high school and college students across the United States and around the world. Answer.AI is a 24/7 tutor and counselor that accelerates student success–anytime and anywhere. Answer.AI doesn't just give answers, it creates a judgment-free zone where students can ask more, with more confidence. It guides students to understanding with step-by-step, personalized, support and industry-leading accuracy. The way we learn is changing, and it's changing fast. The Answer.AI community can help us keep up.
Lighting up Learners Across the US
This year brought explosive growth for Answer.AI, as students embraced new ways to learn without limits. After launching in April 2023, we grew to six million students by September 2024 and, most importantly, have seen a whole lot of learning happen on the app this year alone.
Lots of learning
Answer.AI students spent some serious time learning, growing, and succeeding with us in 2024. Active users spent an average of 14 minutes per week and active Premium users spent an average of 57 minutes. One star student had a whopping 831 rounds of conversations with our AI, and Premium active users asked six times as many questions, on average, than average users.
They're already seeing results, too, in how confident and capable they feel even while tackling their most challenging coursework. This year, students came forward to tell us that they sometimes feel embarrassed to ask others for help, but with AI and the safe zone it creates, they don't hit the same social-emotional barriers. In one recent survey conducted in the Fall, 45% of respondents said they'd be very disappointed if they could no longer use Answer.AI.

Goals Beyond Grades
This year brought new experiments in how students use AI, with tools that support their longer-term objectives – like finding the right-fit college or financial aid – edging in behind a still-dominant demand for immediate tutoring and study support.
Grades ARE still top of mind
Answer.AI launched with 24/7 personalized tutoring available right from your phone. This year, students still turned to us in droves for help with homework and test prep. Not only were these the most used features, but students reported grades as their top definition of success today.
You asked, we answered–features for educational access and equity
If our AI Tutor was designed to meet students where they are, in 2024 we unveiled powerful tools designed to take our students where they aspire to be. An AI Counselor now matches students with colleges after a short, chat interview – suggesting everything from safety schools to stretch targets. That Counselor is helping to meet an urgent need in education. In one survey, 51% of our community reported that they’ve never connected with their school’s counselor.

Meanwhile, over 60% of students across all of our top five states reported their intentions to apply for scholarships. Our new Scholarship Advisor can make suggestions for financial aid regardless of a student’s GPA and geographic location, and we hope it is a transformative tool for our many first-generation college-goers.
Education leaders weighed in
Some thought leaders and like-minded partners helped us expand our vision of student success in 2024:
- Our team joined National Association for College Admissions Counseling college fairs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Boston, reaching over 20,000 high school students and parents to connect about higher education.
- UCLA Board Member Juan Pablo Garces Ramirez helped Answer.AI students with transferring from community colleges to top universities.
- Jane Chen, Founder/CEO of Letterly and a former Harvard interviewer and CEO Letterly’s CEO, helped our community draft stellar personal statements.
- Kevin Ladd, a scholarship judge for the National Elks Foundation, presented his tips for scoring scholarships.
- Jeniffer Finetti shared more insights for finding and applying for financial aid.
- Actor/Producer/Author/Rapper and Harvard Graduate School of Education grad Justin Alexander Gordon shared how hip-hop can inform storytelling and language building.
Subjects Matter
Many AI tutoring tools struggle with the most complex math and science problems. Not Answer.AI. As a result, and building on a trend that started last year, STEM subjects top the chart of the most commonly asked and answered questions in our app.
More math and science
Math came in as the top subject on Answer.AI at 34%. Biology just edged out History at 13% and 10%, respectively. In a context where statewide test scores in math and science improved last year, but still fell short of pre-COVID levels in states from California to Pennsylvania, our AI Tutor is happy to keep filling the gap for schools and students.
APs enter the chat
2024 brought a whole new way to delve into top subjects with AP Quest. Through fun challenges and micro-achievements, AP Quest helps students study their way through units for AP US History, Euro, English Literature and Composition, Psychology, and more. The best part? AP Quest merges LLM and NLP technology with the work of instructional designers from prestigious institutions like Stanford University.
Students are using AI to learn anything, anywhere
Contrary to popular belief (and press headlines!), every student is not using AI to plagiarize or cheat. They are using AI to build knowledge, get better grades, get into college, and succeed there. From tutoring and homework help, to prepping for AP tests and finding scholarships, Answer.AI students used our AI agents for holistic growth and achievement.
Sidenote: Meet your AI Crew
Our app’s look and feel are changing too, inspired by our community. Before looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, let’s take a moment to meet the new characters who drive Answer.AI. They’re cute enough for your screen and smart enough to help shape your future.
Ace represents the high-impact, on-demand tutoring we’re known for. By adding Grant and Alma to his team, we’re showing students that we understand the importance of not just getting the grades, but graduating without overwhelming debt, finding your passions, and more in the journey from college to career.
Looking Ahead
Traditionally, if student success had a cheat code it looked like access to personalized support, priced by the hour and/or available by appointment only. Today, it looks like Answer.AI. Here are the things our students love most about the app they’re helping to shape, every day:
At Answer.AI, we’re proud to support a diverse and ambitious student community: 55% are in high school, while 20% are currently already in college and using Answer.AI to drive success there. Of them:
- 30% are Black and 21% are Hispanic
- 15% Asian and 19% White
- 2% Native American or Alaska Native
- 1% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
- 11% Other
- 53% are female and female-identifying
80% of Answer.AI students in high school said they plan to attend college—outpacing the national average of 61% for U.S. high school students
